Ustream - Monday July 1

Here in the Flamingo Scraps Pond we are kicking off Christmas in July.  We thought it would be nice to get a jump start on your holiday decor, cards, and daily journals.  So the design team is going to flood our blog with awesome projects to kick start your holiday juices.

I hope you can join us Live on Monday night - July 1 on Ustream at 8:30 p.m. est

We are going to make a few Christmas ornaments that are simple for children to make.  They are great home decore items, or could be used on  packages rather than bows.

I will feature papers in the Flamingo Scraps bargin bin from Carta Bella and Echo Park. These kits  have been greatly reduced to $16 and are going to go FAST!

We hope you can join us live, but as always we will try to record the show in case you miss it.

Hope to see you in the chat on Monday night!

Thanks for stopping in today,

June Flamingo Four

It's time for another Flamingo Four!  This month, three other designers and I worked with these four items:

                                1) wood frame- Sheffield Custom Frames
                                2) snowflake stencil- Tattered Angels
                                3) dimensional quotes- miscellaneous
                                4) cupcake topper- miscellaneous

Melissa's Take

I'm not going to lie! This Flamingo 4 was a challenge for me. I started off with the frame, and painted it with gesso as a base, and then misted it with Primrose Color Shine. Then I took some modeling paste and tinted it with Georgia Peach Color Shine and used the mask to lay down the modeling paste.

Next, I played with the cupcake topper and decided I liked the color, the texture, but not the stick or the clip for it, so I took it apart! From there, I decided it made a nice backer on the frame and gave it a great burst of color, so I used some glue dots to stick it to the back. I decided that I would feature one of the dimensional quotes, so I cut a small piece of chipboard, painted it with gesso and then sprayed it Primrose to match the frame. Once it dried, I attached it to the cupcake topper and then stuck the quote over it. For added interest, I attached a few flowers.

Abigail's Take

The first thing I did was to paint the frame with Tim Holtz Distress Paint. I used the Walnut Stain and let it dry completely. Then I used the Weathered Wood to go over the surface, but avoiding the nooks and crannies. Lastly I used the Snowflake stencil from Tattered Angels and misted over the frame with a light blue. I then I used some Pink Paislee Secret Crush paper to make a background.

I could have put the paper closer to the front, but I wanted to make kind of a shadow box effect.

I love the slight hint of a pattern created with the stencil and the faux vintage effect of the layering of the paint.

Alicia's Take

For this month's Flamingo Four, I decided to create a frame with a bit of a "textured" look to it.  I painted the frame with a base coat of yellow paint, and let it dry.  Then I used the snowflake mask across the face of the frame and applied the pink paint to it.  After that layer dried, it was a bit too bright for me, so I watered down some apricot colored paint and did a light coat across the whole thing, then followed that up with a watered down whitewash coat as well.  Once I had it toned down, I decided to cut the stick off of the paper flower and adhered the "Life is in Bloom" saying to the front.  I adhered that to the frame and tucked the "Beautiful" metal embellishment behind the flower to create a little cluster in the bottom corner.  Now, all I need to do is find the right picture to put in it!

Cindy's Take

Last time, I struggled with incorporating the very heavy metal clothespin into my project.  This month, it was the cupcake topper that really challenged me.  That and the fact that none of my quotes had any of the same colors as the topper.  Then there's the stencil.  A snowflake stencil would be easy for a winter project, but there are no winter colors in any of the other items... and besides, this is June!

As I played around with the frame, I realized that the opening was the perfect size to hold a gift card.  I popped a Baskin-Robbins gift card into the frame, then noticed that the pink of their logo matched one of the dimensional quotes I needed to use.  I cut down the quote from "Enjoy your life" to just "Enjoy" and started playing around.  What if I used the blue of the logo to paint the frame, then used just part of the snowflake stencil to stamp in pink?  That would have more of a summery tropical feel instead of a wintry snowflake feel.  It took awhile to mix the perfect shade of pink and to decide what part of the stencil to use as a stamp, but with three items used, the project was definitely coming together.

But what about the green and orange cupcake topper that was nearly as large as the frame?  It just wasn't working.  Eventually, I tore it apart.  I used the chipboard hook end and painted it the same blue as the frame and attached it as a hanger.  I cut the tiny bit of green tissue paper from the orange and used it as an accent color.  Here's the finished project:

When the gift card is removed, the recipient can use it as a frame.

That wraps up another fun Flamingo Four! We'd love to see your take. If you make something using the same four supplies as our designers, send us a picture and we'll feature it here on the blog. To find the materials we used (and so much more!) visit the Flamingo Scraps store!

Mini Album Using the Envelope Board

Hello  Flockinistas!
This is the Pink Paislee Hope Chest Mini Album that I made using the NEW!!!!! Envelope Punch Board.  I LOVE this collection! The vintage light pinks and just a hit of color throughout, so I paired it  with some browns. The ephemera packs are chock full of goodness. I used several elements from FlamingoScraps . I must say I LOVE this board!! Fast and easy once you get the hang of it. Before I glued the envelopes, I put in a circle and a brad to tie some string around the envelopes to keep them closed . I used a few different sizes. I like the fact that you can make larger envelopes with the board as well.

On the cover, I used chipboard  prepped with Gesso, then  mixed some Tim Holtz Distress Paint ,Broken China, with heavy molding paste and used a brick stencil. Next came the Prima Chalk Edgers in Vintage Pink, Pastel Pink and Pastel Brown to add the different shadings around the cover. I cut some of the Prima SIIC Hexagon Clear to add just a little bling to the cover.

With this typewriter I used TH Distress Paint Black Soot and Silver. I used Pink Paislee She Art — Coffee Filter Sheets Words for the paper coming out of the typewriter.

For the front, I used the Prima Symphony Blend Amoroso Pink, Prima Sherwood Rose Partridge and then the Prima Chalk Fluid Edger Vintage Pink ,Prima Chalk Fluid Edger Pad – Pastel Pink.  I used   Prima Ceylon White Wedding to color the flowers by spraying them with water after you use the chalk edgers. By doing this, it blends the colors to make it look more natural. I also used a Maya Road Trinket Pins Crystals

To close this book up I used a Tim Holtz Buckle and some Prima Alencon Lace 1
I tucked the lace under the typewriter so it would hold the lace in place.

Now on to the inside of the book...
Pages 1-2
I used a FabScraps Die-Cut Grey Chipboard Decorative Hinges
and used them as a place to put pictures or tags.

Found Inspiration - Serendipity

Hi Flockinistas!
It's Alicia, here again with another layout using Heidi Swapp's Serendipity line.  :)  Sometimes, inspiration comes from the strangest places.  While flipping through a magazine, last fall, this ad really had something that caught my eye, so I kept it in a binder so I could refer back to it when the time was right.

Initially, I thought that it would be the ombre effect of the blue pellets that would be my jumping off point, but when I saw the "sun rays" in the yellow Heidi Swapp Serendipity paper, it brought this ad to mind, and I had to dig it out.

I traced the lines of the "rays" with a yellow marker to define them a little better, without making them standout too much.  In place of the product in the ad, I flipped the design and placed my picture on the right side, instead of the left.  The letters that I dug out of my stash for the main part of my title play on the ombre effect, like the pellets in the ad.

Here is the side-by-side comparison... not an exact replica, but you can definitely see the inspiration that was sparked by the ad.

Don't forget to always be on the look out for inspiration!
Until next time!

Clean or Dirty?

Good morning, Flockinistas!

Melissa, here, on what will be my tenth wedding anniversary! But, on to the real reason I'm posting about my anniversary on the Flamingo Scraps blog. Well, the answer is simple. My husband has been bugging me for just as long to make a clean and dirty sign for the dishwasher, so that we can know whether it needs to be run or if it needs to be unloaded to make room for more dishes. I figured having it on our anniversary will be a wonderful gift to him.

So, here's what I came up with:

It really looks way more simple than it went together, let me tell you! I started with a chipboard base, like what comes in a paper pack or when you receive scrapbook supplies in the mail from... well... Flamingo Scraps, of course. I cut it down to 6x6 and then painted it with gesso on both sides. At that point, I wasn't really sure what direction I was going. I didn't need to paint both sides, obviously, but I did have to wait for it to all dry. Next I took some Tim Holtz Distress Paint in Broken China, special ordered from Flamingo Scraps, and painted about an inch in on each side and let that dry. I then coated the entire thing with paper Mod Podge, and placed a 5.5x5x5 square of paper from the Pink Paislee Hope Chest collection down and then painted over it all again with Mod Podge, then left it to dry overnight.

The next morning, I did some masking with Prima masks, first the Static 12x12 over the whole thing, using Heidi Swapp Color Shine in Georgia Peach and then with the Checkers 12x12 mask in Tropicana Teal. Both masks are available via special order from Flamingo Scraps! Next, I got out some old foam stamps and used my Tim Holtz Distress Paints (available special order) in Walnut Stain and Spiced Marmalade to make the clean/dirty combo.

I lined each of the stamped letters with black ink and then distress Stickles to make them stand out a little better.

Last, I poked holes a quarter inch off center on each side and strung some Maya Road twine through it and tied it in a bow. Then, just for some extra dirt on the dirty side, I took a distress stamp in my stash and some black distress ink and added a bit to the edges. Now all it needs is some magnets stuck to the back (I'm going to let the Mod Podge set for another night because it was all still a little tacky as I was finishing up), and it can be flipped as needed.

So there you have it! Hope you have a wonderful day!

Until next time,
Keep scrapping!
Melissa

Just Sayin' Hi

This card is for a lovely friend that I don't get to see very often. I think it's always nice to get a handmade card in the mailbox. Cards are a great way to use up all those little bits and pieces leftover from other projects. I made this one using scraps from Teresa Collins Now and Then, Pink Paislee Secret Crush and Heidi Swapp Vintage Chic. To begin I used some white card stock as a base. Rounding the corners gives it a nice finished look. I spattered some inkblots across the front, just for fun.
Scrapbookista-Banner-Card
I cut all the banner strips and then fussy cut a few of the doily shapes from the Pink Paislee paper and then just layered them up. I just love the shape of a ribbon cut banner =)
Scrapbookista-Banner-Card-2
Don't forget the envelope! I used paper from the Teresa Collins Now and Then Collection and the We R Memory Keepers Envelope Punch Board. This is seriously the best tool you could own in your scrap stash! Envelopes are now so easy to make =)
Scrapbookista-Banner-Card-3
Now all I have to do is put a stamp on it and send it off =)

Simple Card with Shaving Cream Painting Tutorial

I hate to buy cards, and one way to try out a new technique without feeling like I wasted my time on a small ATC or tag that I will never do anything with is to try the technique on a card, my family gets a lot of guinea pig cards due to this - thanks guys!!

Here is my father's day card I made for my husband this year.  I used a new technique to me, painting with shaving cream.  This is nothing new, kids crafts have done it for years, and it creates a really cool effect - so please do not feel like I created his new idea, but I did not follow another persons tutorial or post, it came out of my head for how I did it.

I used plain kraft cardstock for the base of the card, and then cream cardstock for the base of the shaving cream painting (I matted the painted paper in the same cream cardstock).  I then added a small sentiment I printed and hand wrote and a cute little paperclip bird from Maya Road - go check out Flamingo Scraps to get yourself one!!

Shaving Cream Painting Tutorial

1) Supplies - Cardstock, shaving cream, glimmer mist (I used Heidi Swapp Color Shine in green, yellow, red, and orange), foam brush, small container to hold shaving cream (small bowl works great).

2) Fill up you bowl with about 1 cup of shaving cream, this is plenty for a 12x12 cardstock, i only did an 8x8 size paper.  Open up the top of your mist and pour some onto the shaving cream in different places.  Use your brush to mix it  - only one or two stirs, do not over mix or you just create a new color.

3) Cover paper with shaving cream all the way to the edges.  I placed my craft mat under my paper so no big deal if it leaked over, easy clean up with water.  Don't' over mix you shaving cream when applying it, or you will not get the swirly effect.

4) I let it sit for about 1 min and pulled all the shaving cream off the paper at this point and it looked like this.  It was not as blended as I wanted it to be, it was too white.  This could easily be a stopping point for you if you wanted.  I would still let it dry for an hour or so before you did anything else to it.

5) I reapplied the same shaving cream (it still had color in it) and covered the entire paper again.  This time I made sure there were lots of peaks and valleys so I used the foam brush and pulled up the shaving cream to create the peaks.

Here you can see the peaks I created.  This is just to give the paper more texture when it dried.  At this point I then sprayed with the sprayer mist bottle a little of each of the colors I poured into the shaving cream from the start to create another layer of color.  I then let it dry.

 6) This is what it looked like after 3 hours of drying time.  As you can see some of the shaving cream is starting to evaporate and dry out, but not all of it.  The more shaving cream you apply the longer it takes to dry.  This is a patient craft!!

7) After 4 hours I scraped off the remaining shaving cream and got this result.  You could have left it dry over night and had nothing to scrape off, it would have just given you paper more texture.

I then cut this paper up and created 3 strips for my card, but this could easily be used as a background or a create your own patterned paper.

Here is the finished card again.

Before I applied the bird and the sentiment I flicked some mist on over the entire card - same colors I used before.

Supplies Used
Shaving Cream
Cardstock
Pen

Enjoy!!
