Tutorial: Embossing with Maya Mist

This is one of my favorite techniques I have come across so far!  And it is a pretty easy process too!

Preparation is key for this process - you will have to move quickly so you have to have everything ready to go. You need a silicone mat, Ranger UTEE, an embossing gun, maya mist (any mist will work too!), a piece of paper (or whatever you want to emboss) and a stencil (if you want to use one). 

You ready?

So take a stencil....

Now move quickly.... drench the stencil in mist:

Now carefully pick up the stencil and flip it onto your paper, press it down lightly to transfer all that mist to the paper, peel the stencil off the paper and immediately dump UTEE over the misted image before it has a chance to really soak into the paper.

Did I mention you will get mist all over your fingers?!   So it will look kind of like sugar that you spilled in water.  Shake the excess UTEE off and start that embossing gun:

Apply the heat until it beads up and looks like water.  The key here is to make sure all the "sugar" looking stuff is gone.  And voila... you will be left with this!

Yep, that fabulous watery, shimmery image is completely DRY.  And embossed.  It's seriously my new favorite thing.  So of course, I had to try it on chipboard to see if it would work there too.... Success!  Just had to move even more quickly before the chipboard soaked it all up!

Tutorial: Making Patterned Paper with Maya Resist

So I'm all about making my own patterned paper.  I grabbed myself a piece of white cardstock and decided I wanted to make some plaid paper using the maya resist and some maya mist. WOW!  LOVE how it turned out.  Here's how I did it.

First, decide what pattern you want to make on your paper.  I decided to do a freehand plaid type pattern on the paper.  I started by drawing one set of lines in one direction:

I didn't want the lines to bleed together when I crossed the from the other direction so I waited for the first set of lines to dry for about ten minutes and came back and went the opposite direction.  Now I kept drying the resist and layering on more until I got to here:

The best part is that if you are unhappy with a line or something you draw, just wait for it to dry, peel it off and start over before you ink or mist over the top of it!! 

Once I had my lines all drawn in, I misted the sheet with a layer of orange mist:

I used Jack O Lantern glimmer mist, but Tangerine Metallic Maya Mist would also work great! The thing that really separates the glimmer mist and the Maya Mist is the coverage. Glimmer mist is more opaque and takes many sprays to cover the paper, which causes it to warp. When you use Maya Mist, you spray less mist (saving you money!) to get the same coverage as glimmer mist, so it causes far less warping of your paper.  Here is how my paper warped with the glimmer mist:

Not bad or a deal breaker, just an observation and one of the reasons I am a convert to Maya Mists!

Once I had the orange mist done and dried, I peeled up the resist.  Go slow so that you don't grab any of the paper with it!

That turquoise ball is the used Maya Resist!!  It's like dried rubber cement... kinda stringy and a little tacky.

Now that I had this, I decided I wanted to add two more colors to my plaid pattern.  So I grabbed my Turquoise Maya Mist,my Coffee Shop glimmer mist and two small paint brushes.   Yep, you read that right, paint brushes!   Did you know you could screw the lid off of your bottle and use the mists like a water color paint?

Simply shake your bottle of Maya Mist (if it is glimmer mist, swirl it -- never shake it! Air bubbles are the enemy that causes those big splatters!) and unscrew the lid, dip your brush in and off you go!

I let each color dry before adding another so I could get a clean line.

Once the paper was dried, I used it as a patterned paper on my goofy layout (again with no pictures -- still waiting on them all to show up from my family members!):

And since I cannot stand to waste paper, I used the rest to make my husband this little card:

Banners

I don't know if you have noticed, but banners are huge this season.  Banners as home decor, banners printed onto patterned paper and small banners added to layouts.

With my anniversary coming next week, I thought it might be fun to make a banner to celebrate.

Products used from Flamingo Scraps, Prima:  Raspberry Tea patterned flowers and glitter cardstock stickers.  Flights of Fancy patterned flowers.  Maya Road:   Deborah chipboard, trinket pins (leaf and pink flowers), chandelier beads. Ranger Industries:  Diamond Stickles

Using a banner kit from Maya Road, I cut the back side of some Pink Paislee papers into the triangle shape.  I added some mint green cardstock to the back and then cut with my scalloped scissors, bits of a border sticker from Prima topped the base of my flag.

Then on to the embellishing.  Lovely Prima blooms and some fun page pebbles filled the flag.  I used the Deborah chipboard and some glass glitter for the sentiment.  

And finally, beautiful Maya Road stick pins and chandelier beads.  A bit of Diamond Stickles and  I was ready to piece it all together.  

I added a couple of my favorite photos of my dh and I together, mounted on the same mint green cardstock, strung it all together with some lace and voila.

Tutorial: Maya Resist on Chipboard

One of the first things I wanted to do with my Maya Resist was use it to alter chipboard.  Of course, I am excited to start scrapping my Disney pictures and the first thing I thought of was making minnie mouse patterned chipboard letters. 
First, figure out your layout title and how you want to color them.  I'm making my layout titled "Meeting Minnie Mouse".  The words "Minnie Mouse" were cut out using my Mickey and Friends Cricut cartridge, but the new Maya Road Deborah chipboard alphabet worked perfectly for "meeting."  When you use the bottle of Maya Resist, you barely have to squeeze the bottle.... Perfect little drops of resist!

Now step away and let it dry.  You will probably hear me say that a lot but you need to let the stuff dry completely in order to have it work!
 
Now come back and spray with your mist getting a complete layer of coverage. 
 

I let it dry and then peeled off the resist.  Go carefully and gently peeling it off the chipboard, as it may want to pull up the top layer of chipboard if you do it too quickly.
 

So now that it was misted and polka dotted, I added some Ranger Glossy Accents to really make the letters stand out on my layout:

When using Glossy Accents, it starts out cloudy, but dries completely clear.  Can you see on the left that the letter "m" is already starting to look shiny but the "g" I did last is still blue-ish and not opaque? 

Keep an eye out because soon Flamingo Scraps will be carrying Ranger Glossy Accents!!

Once everything has dried you have some pretty cool Minnie Mouse style polka dot letters.

Other supplies: peppermint stick glimmer mist.  You could use Cherry Metallic Maya Mist, which I would have preferred for better coverage of the chipboard, but do not own yet!

Of course, I couldn't just use the mist on the chipboard letters, I had to spray some of my new white e-line flowers too.....

More Fun, New Prima and Maya Road

I just have to mention how much fun I have been having with all the new goodies I got at Flamingo Scraps last week. These products are just so gorgeous. I am going to be sad when I run out. Of course, new things are coming soon, keep your eye out.  I will give you a little hint;  PP, WP.  Don't tell the boss I told you.  hee hee

I found some beautiful German glass glitter the other day and couldn't wait to try it out.  The Maya Road butterflies that Lisa Pace has made over on the Maya Road DT blog are gorgeous, so I thought I would give them a try myself.  I really liked the way they came out, and they were perfect with the Prima papers.  A little help from a pagemaps sketch and......

I used more of the Raspberry Tea paper, and stamped my cardstock with an acrylic stamp with some Iridescent Pearl Maya Mist.  Some pretty Prima flowers and a Say it in Pearls and Roses, some Maya Road chipboard butterflies, Deborah mini font and a few of the floral stick pins. And I was just about done.  I Love the new Prima packaging, perfect for journaling later.

Tutorial: Organizing Mists

So I tend to be a collector.  I have 10 linear feet of patterned paper in cropper hoppers (no joke)... a basket of flowers sorted by color (we will get to that some other time!).... and my mists.  There are 22 of them.  Yep, you read that right.... TWENTY TWO.  eek!  So in my newly reorganized office, I desparately needed a way to know what colors I have to play with and what they look like because they are in a basket in the new closet.  And I am forever forgetting what colors I have.  So I created this handy little swatch book to toss on my desktop in my basket of most used stickles, ink pads and paint dabbers:

First, I cut two pieces of plain white 12x12" cardstock into 3x3" squares, which gave me 32 squares.  (Room to grow I hope!)

Then I punched one edge with my favorite edge punch at the moment (martha stewart mini scallop heart) and the remaining two corners with a corner rounder.

My fingers hurt after all that punching!!

So before I start spraying mists everywhere, I cleared the desktop and put down some scrap chipboard (leftover from a paper pack) to catch any stray mist.  Newspaper would work well too.  And I busted out my trusty sharpie pen.  Before spraying a card, I made sure to write down exactly which mist I was using!

So then I took each of the sprays in my stash one at a time and gave each 3x3" square a spray or two to cover about half of the area.  I wanted to make sure that I still showed a good portion of the white to give me a point of reference to compare to. 

Once I had my pile of 22 sample cards, I took two of my blank cards and played a little with my new Maya Resist.  I freehand spelled out "My Mist Stash" with the resist.  I have to say that I am in LOVE with the Maya Resist!  The bottle comes with this fabulous lid that has a pin already built into it -- no trying to unplug the bottle EVER!  Also, the tip is super fine which allows for all kinds of control.  I would guess that the tip is about the size of a pin head.  It isn't like a bottle of stickles or glue with a wide application tip.  Trust me, you will love this stuff!

So once you have the Maya Resist on there, just walk away and let it dry for a while.  Once it was dry, I came back and misted several colors on my cover cards to make them stand out from the rest of my swatches.

Once they dried completely, I peeled off the resist leaving me with this super cool cover:

Note:  It is very important to make sure your paper is completely dry before trying to peel the resist off the paper!!

When everything was dry, I punched a hole in the upper left hand corner of each swatch with my cropodile and used a ring to attach them altogether! 

Now I have a great little "cheat sheet" for my mist stash, which also comes in handy when I'm drooling over the fabulous new colors of Maya Mist and trying to decide what to buy!

A Little Contest

My box of yummy new goodies came this week, and like a lot of you, I couldn't wait to find the time to play.  So many fun, new goodies.  The mojo was strong and I so wanted to use everything in my box.  So I created these.....

With these two layouts (3 pages) I used a total of  21 different products that are (were recently, stuff is moving fast) available in the Flamingo Scraps store.

If I used the same item on both pages, it only counts once.  Stickers from the same sheet would also, only count once.  Remember that we also carry mists and it is possible that I have colored an item or two. (hint, hint)

Hi, my name is Amanda...

And I am addicted to Primas.  There, I admitted to it.  And yes, it's a disease!   Do you have it too?! 

I'm so excited to be here to show you some the cool stuff I learned at the Winter CHA classes I took on stamping and mists, as well as all of the fun things you could do with all this fabulous new stuff arriving in the store.   Since CHA, life has been very busy for me -- my brother visited from the east coast, we gutted/rebuilt/reorganized the scraproom closet and I turned 30.  There has not been a lot of time for playing with my stash of scrappy goodies.  In fact, we just got back from a family vacation to Disneyland -- our first big family vacation all together in seventeen years!  We had a great time and took a ton of pictures, all just begging to be scrapped.

So you can definitely expect to see some Disney layouts using your favorite new products in the Flamingo Scraps store (and even some tutorials!)... keep an eye out over the next few weeks as I begin playing with those pictures and products! So aside from Disney stuff, what else can you expect to see out of me? Well I tend to scrapbook my husband, our wedding, our pets, my nephew, family and friends the most.  And I love to experiment and play with my scrappy toys, so hopefully I can show ya a cool new trick or two.

Before I hit my scrappy desk for a weekend of misting stuff to share with y'all, I wanted to share a few layouts in my scrapbooks that I absolutely love... mostly because of the prima bling I used on them!
