Chust for Pretty -- Spring Jubilee Mini Album!!!

I have this long ago memory, I think from a juvenile book set in the Amish Country of Pennsylvania, of the reason hex signs are painted on many Pennsylvania Dutch barns.  Queried about the symbolism of the hex signs -- were they to ward off evil spirits?  did they have religious significance?  were they some kind of special code? -- an Amish farmer replied in his thick German accent -- they are "Chust for Pretty!"  That really had an impact on me -- an object doesn't have to have deep symbolic meaning to justify its creation -- being pretty is enough.

This is my new mantra for crafting!  I shall no longer put off creating things until I have a reason or someone to give it to.  It makes me happy to craft so, I give myself permission to do it "Chust for Pretty."  And my first project is this Pink Paislee Spring Jubilee mini album.

Pink Paislee was spot on with its collections released at Winter 2012 CHA.  Sugar Chic and Spring Jubilee are easily among my FAVORITE collections ever!!!  Having quenched my desire for Sugar Chic with a little purse mini, I turned my attention to the gorgeous color palette, patterns, and embellishments of Spring Jubilee!  I started with a Maya Road acrylic album --

Guest DT Janet Zeppa: Looking at Gifts

I still had enough if the beautiful Websters Garden Gala collection to create another page about my Mom's 80th birthday party.  It's about my Mom looking at some of her gifts.

From Flamingo Scraps:  Webster's Pages Garden Gala (patterned papers); Kaisercraft Pearls; Tim Holtz Distress Ink;
Other Supplies: Martha Stewart border punch; Making Memories (stickers); Savvy n' Sassy (Ribbon); Spellbinders Nestabilities dies; sewing machine + thread

I really like how my journaling spots turned out. I die cut some of the pretty paper to make them.

Guest DT Janet Zeppa: Mom's 80th Birthday Party

We are back today with another one of our guest design team members, Janet, who made a beautiful layout using one of our favorite paper lines!

Mom's 80th birthday was so much fun and I love this photo that I got of my parents. They are just the sweetest.

From Flamingo Scraps:  Websters Pages Garden Gala collection (patterned papers); Prima flowers & pearls; Maya Road flowers; Kaisercraft bling
Other Supplies:  Punches (Martha Stewart, EK Success); Pens (Sakura); Mist (Ritzy Ditzy Glitz): Lace (AMM); Stamp (Stampin' Up!); Ink (ColorBox); Sketch (Frosted Designs)

This Websters collection was just perfect for scrapping this picture from my Mom's garden party.  I enjoyed misting and fussy cutting and adding some bling to my layout.

Old Page Maps Challenge!

First of all, from us at Flamingo Scraps, Happy Memorial Day!!

I love the Old Page Maps challenge at Scrapbook.com!  The hostess posts four older Page Maps by Becky Fleck and the players do a layout with each one during a four week period.  I really like using Becky's fabulous Page Maps for inspiration and this challenge always inspires me and MAKES me make time to scrap!!
This is the page map for week #3.

I turned it on its side to fit my group photo from our recent scrapbook retreat and used Kaiser Craft Pina Colada papers and embellishments (can you guess why I love this pattern so much?!):

(HINT:  It's the flamingos!!)
From Flamingo Scraps:  Kaisercraft Pina Colada collection papers and embellishments

The embroidered patches, punchouts, and brads that go with the Pina Colada papers are just too cute!  In addition, the collection has coordinating alpha stickers and color rubons.  I used Maya Road inks in orange and deep rose, and Spellbinders Nestabilities to cut the scalloped circles.  The swirlies are bits and pieces of old laser cuts from my stash.

We had such fun on our ride around Old Town St. Augustine in the Surrey With the Fringe on Top!  For more of our adventures, stayed tuned for my next Old Pagemaps blog!  Thanks for looking!

Scraptathlon Week # 3

This week's challenge threw all the Scraptathletes for a loop!  Our song title inspiration was "Stupid" by Toad the Wet Sprocket and we were to scrap something stupid.  Our instructions were to showcase something STUPID... something we said or something we did.  Or make the layout about someone else or something else. The word stupid, or a synonym had to find its way prominently on to our page.

Here's what Susan had to say about her Week # 3 layout.......
I knew immediately I was going to use the word "Twp".  My mother's family is Welsh and twp is Welsh for stupid.  But it's not an insulting kind of stupid, it translates more to being blissfully unaware of something and therefore is a more endearing term.  My entire family uses the word twp.  Twp is pronounced tup.

At one family birthday celebration, many years ago now, my youngest sister offered to bring the pinata for a party game.  Unfortunately, she was blissfully unaware that she had to buy candy and fill the pinata herself!  No one noticed until the kids had whacked the pinata to pieces and still no candy and goodies!  We all had a good laugh about how twp my sister was - at least the adults did.  The kids were pretty upset about no candy!

Here's my layout for Scraptathalon Week # 3 - I used a Page Maps Sketch by Becky Fleck:
Flamingo Scraps supplies used:  Kaisercraft's Penny Royale collection papers, brads and die cuts.  Prima Marketing's Madrigal Blossoms, Prima's Say It In Pearls and Roses Pink Swirl and Corner, Webster's Pages Postcards from Paris Storyteller Alphabet Stickers, Tim Holtz Distress Inks.

I chose the Penny Royale papers because I thought the terra cotta hues were representative of the southwest and Mexico.  I think they are a gorgeous color combination and the collection comes with many more coordinating items such as rub-ons and embroidered patches.  All available at Flamingo Scraps Thanks for looking!

And here was Amanda's take on the challenge.....
This one stumped me.  And forced me to head to the one hour photo once I figured out what I wanted to do and spent an hour trying to remember what year my stupid event I was trying to scrap happened in!  Ultimately, I chose to scrap about an unfortunate stupid accident involving my husband, our cat, her tail and the front door.  It wasn't pretty!!  If you want to read the journaling, you can click on over to here to read the typed out version.

From Flamingo Scraps:  Webster's Garden Gala patterned papers (background and brown patterned), Webster's trims (aqua trim and brown lace), Webster's alphabet stickers, Coco Ruffle trim and Prima white fairytale roses
Other supplies:  brown cardstock, brown fine point sharpie pen, martha stewart heart punch, Basic Grey Urban Prairie patterned paper (under photo collage and under date/name box), brown doodlebug simply sweet alpha rub-ons

Sorry for the kinda funky scan -- all those flowers make the scanner do wonky shadows!!  I made the journaling box for nala and the date by using the die cut sheet from bayberry cottage as a stencil.  I traced it, cut it out and doodled a mirror image line along the inside of the shape.  I also traced the unique mat under the photo collage by using a Making Memories mistletoe collection journaling book page as a stencil for one edge of the paper.

Hope you enjoyed reading about our stupid (twp) moments and the layouts they inspired!

Marks Paper Company

I love the Courtship collection from Marks Paper Company.  The colors of the paper are just beautiful and the texture of the paper is fabulous, almost like fabric.  I have done a few layout with it that I am happy with, but had a bit of the paper left and just couldn't figure out a way to use.  Until I started thinking "home decor".  The colors are perfect for my home, soft and pretty, neutral enough not to clash with anything, but enough color that they aren't "white".

Bits of the papers, some beautiful Prima bloom that I added stickles to, a butterfly vine I chopped, inked and stickled and some velvet trim.  Before glittering the chipboard title, I misted with brown to make sure no naked chipboard would be showing.  So much quicker than paint.

I mounted the top layers (through the red) onto a piece of chipboard  and adhered.  Then I glued the brown piece of cardstock to the back, face up and went around with my scallop scissors.  Thanks to Lisa Pace for showing me the trick to getting the perfect edge around your chipboard project.  Just follow the line of your chipboard.  No more cutting and then gluing for me.  And it really added quite a bit of depth to the project.

Here you can see that I munged the leaves to help them tie into the overall color scheme with some walnut ink.  I also added more platinum stickles to the petals.

One last project.....
The light here isn't very good, but you can see how beautiful the papers blend together on the KaiserKraft memo board.

Hope I was able to inspire you today.

Hugs.

Nancy
