Weekend Whimsy: Storytime!

Flamingo Scraps -- A Modern Fairy Tale

Once upon a time in a far away land, two beautiful princesses locked in a tower decided to try scrapbooking!  Actually it was two crafty divas locked in a bus with 20 deafeningly enthusiastic teenagers -- but the once upon a time in a far away land is true enough!!!

Susan and Suzanne met when they were both chaperones on a church Mission Trip to Italy in 2004.  One day, quite out of the blue, as the group's bus  wound its way to a small mountain town, Susan asked Suzanne if she had ever tried scrapping.  Neither one had, but Suzanne was in charge of the craft program and Susan was taking scores of pictures, so they made a pact that when they returned to Palatka, they would make a scrapbook of the trip for their church.  And the rest, as they say, is history!

By the time the scrapbook of the Mission Trip was completed, the two had become fast friends and were completely obsessed with their new hobby.  Both women had always been crafters, both were into researching their family trees and preserving family history, and both were now looking for a way to pay for their newly acquired scrapping habit.

Flamingo Scraps was born!  The name came from Suzanne's screen name on scrapbook.com and was a natural fit since the company is based in NE Florida.  In the beginning the duo put together custom themed scrapping packages for sale on eBay and were known for their unique handmade embellishments.  Soon their work caught the attention of a  local brick and mortar scrapbook store and they became associated with Sassy Scrapbooks, selling their embellishments on consignment, doing custom work, serving as the store's Design Team, and even manning the store.  When Sassy's closed its doors, the two friends decided it was time to strike out on their own.

In October 2008, Flamingo Scraps opened its online doors and Susan and Suzanne have never looked back.  Over the last two years, the business has grown to more than twice its original size in terms of product offerings and customer base.  The two equal partners handle everything to do with the store themselves, no employees -- all the ordering, dealing with vendors, invoicing, packing, shipping, listing and site maintenance, and customer service, as well as serving on the design team, contributing to the blog, managing the Facebook Page, and getting out the newsletters.  When you visit Flamingo Scraps, every aspect of your shopping experience is personally handled by the owners.

However Flamingo Scraps would not be possible without the extraordinary support of family and friends, especially its FABULOUS Design Team members, most recently Amanda (who cannot be thanked enough here!) who manages the Blog and Guest Design Team and has contributed so much in terms of ideas and the success of the business's social networking system.  We are so blessed to be able to do something we love so much.  It is hard work,  even overwhelming at times, but then we remember how much fun we are having and everyone who has supported us over the last two years -- ESPECIALLY our incredible customers.  Flamingo Scraps is here to stay!!!!
