November's Flamingo Four

Cindy here!  I'm thrilled to be taking over as Flamingo Scraps' Flamingo Four coordinator.  Each month, three designers and myself will make projects using the same four items.  I guarantee that you'll be amazed how four different designers using the same four supplies can make four completely different projects!

For November, Design Team members Erin, Alicia, Ramona and I each received the following items:

      1. Glimmer Mist (Clam Bake)
      2. assorted wood veneers
      3. lacy trim
      4. an empty Maya Road tin
You can find Glimmer Mist, all sorts of veneers, beautiful trims and tins full of Maya Road goodies in the Flamingo Scraps store.  After seeing the projects, you may want to make one or more of them for yourself!  Now let's hear from each of the four designers!

Erin's Take:

When I saw the box size I knew it would be perfect as a standard size photo frame. I found a fun picture of my hubby and I and glued it inside the box. I then used the died ribbon and glued it all around the edge of the box, one to hold it together and second a pretty finish to the outside of the box. I used the glimmer mist to die the ribbon and mixed the mist with various gelato colors to color the wood veneers. I used two Prima flowers of complementary colors and the wood veneers to cover up the words Maya Road in the top left corner, hence why the cluster is there, and left the phrase “for the journey of a lifetime” as it fit the picture. I then put magnets on the back and it became a magnetic photo frame to send my husband in Afghanistan.

Alicia's Take:

I decided to create a shadowbox out of my Maya Road tin. I dug through all of my stuff that I collected while we were in Hawaii, and found this awesome postcard (that I had completely forgotten that I had picked up). I loved the turquoise paisley background paper, but it was too bright to go with the colors in the postcard, so I just spritzed it with the Clam Bake Glimmer Mist and did the same with the bright white trim. The mist gave a great color to the trim, and a little shimmer to the background paper! I painted the rectangular wooden piece with a light coat of gesso and then wiped at it with a damp paper towel so I got a kind of whitewashed look, then I used some Jenni Bowlin rub-ons for "aloha". I sprayed the heart veneer with both Color Shine and the Clam Bake glimmer mist to give it a bit of dimension and used some paint, Stickles and another little spritz of glimmer mist for the flower. I decided to keep the slogan portion of the tin, so I rubbed it with a little teal Staz-On and added a little more of the patterned paper around the edge. I just glued the flower and butterfly on the edge and presto! Done!

Ramona's Take:

When I received this Maya Roads tin I right away decided what I could do with it....Mini Album!!  I first painted it with Tim Holtz Acrylic Paint Dabbers Pink Sherbet first and then a layer Elmer's Glue then Cranberry. Then I let it dry so I could start working on it. I just love how I got the wide cracks with this effect. Then I distressed it with Brushed Corduroy Distress Ink to give it that Old and rustic look. I also sprayed Clam Bake Mist by Tattered Angels that had an green but old worn look to it. That gave me the sheen that I was desiring to. I used Prima Romance Novel 6 X 6 paper pack, chipboard, 3 index file cards (cut down) I also made hinges to connect the book pages together. These are the items that I used to make my Mini Album inside. Then I thought a closure....so I grabbed the lace that was in my bag and thought some distressing (dirty hands with Cranberry paint and Brushed Corduroy Ink still on my hands) sprayed it with Clam Bake ruffled it up and This was my finishing tie to this tin. I had so much fun with this challenge using something that I have not ever tried before!

Cindy's Take:

I thought about what I wanted to store in the tin and let my design go from there. My son Trevor needed a place to store the flattened pennies that he's recently started collecting; the tin was just the right size.  The next step was figuring out how to cover up the brand name and slogan on the tin.  What would stick to the metal of the tin AND cover up the words without interfering with the closure of the tin?  Washi tape!  I layered torn bits of washi tape and it worked beautifully.
Because Trevor's pennies are from our travels, I decided to back the opening with a map. I found a 10-year old map of the western US that I haven't used in years and probably will never use again. I cut out the section of California where we live and attached it to the opening. I chose the heart veneer and misted it with the Glimmer Mist. Then I cut apart the trim and misted that.  When the mist was dry, I attached the trim and then added the heart.  The tip of the heart points to where we live.

So what do you think?!  Isn't it amazing how different the four projects are, considering that we all used the same supplies?  We'd love to see your take.  If you make something using the same four supplies our designers had, please let us know and we'll feature it here on the blog!

Playing with Artisan Elements from Pink Paislee

A couple of weeks ago at my mothers house, my oldest son, Morgan decided to lay down beside Catherine on her changing pad ,which was on the floor, and asked me to take a picture.  It was just so cute that I had to grab Brandon and get him in on the act.  I took about 15 shots just hoping that one would turn out, and viola the sweetest picture came out.

I decided to use the picture as a black and white since they were all wearing completely different colors of clothes and I also wanted the picture to work well on my layout of muted colors.

I played around a bit with my Gelatos and Crackle Distress paint from Ranger and look at the wonderful results I got.  I used to it to color my Artisan Elements from Pink Paislee.  Below is a tutorial for how I distress colored my frame corners like the one pictured below.

Distressing Artisan Elements
gelatos in your choice of color
                     distress crackle paint from Ranger

2) Paint your surface with crackle paint - let air dry, if you use a heating tool it will not crackle as much and make your paint bubble.  I used tattered rose as my color.

3) Cover the surface after the paint has dried with your choice of gelato colors, 2 to 3 is good.  Rub the pigments into your surface, trying to enhance the cracks giving it an aged look.  I used guava and metallic melon.

4) Play with the colors and the amount of pigment you apply until you achieve your desired look.

If you want to purchase the Artisan Elements from Pink Paislee or any of the other wonderful items on my page head on over to Flamingo Scraps - see below for list of supplies, and now open, a NEW store Flamingo Scraps.com

Beautiful Inspiration

Sometimes you are inspired by an event. Sometimes you are inspired by a moment. This LO was inspired by a photo. It was a nice warm-ish November night and some good friends invited us out to their country home for some leftover fireworks. Always fun! This time, as a good scrapbooker should, I brought my camera. This pic overwhelmed me. It looked like, not fireworks, but God's creation. It looked as though I was gazing at the night sky full of stars. Too beautiful for words.

This photo in my LO is not edited at all. I love everything about it. It touched me and made me think of stargazing, another fun hobby of mine. I wanted to make a page to capture those emotions that I was feeling at that moment. The base paper is Heidi Swapp Vintage Chic Dotty. I also used the Heidi Swapp Vintage Chic Bookkeeping paper and some Teresa Collins Now and Then paper with the beautiful fireflies and Chevron patterns. The tag envelope is Heidi Swapp I made from Heidi Swapp Sugar Chic Beautiful paper. The embellishments are from the Teresa Collins Now and Then Collection.

Hexagons are my new fav shape of 2012! I hand cut this one from some of the leftover Heidi Swapp Vintage Chic Bookkeeping paper. But, look underneath. There is a fun little piece of black thread, some Gesso over a piece of textured fabric and some fun iridescent glitter I sprinkled on the Gesso before it dried. I love all the texture the fabric and the Gesso adds!

I was so moved and touched by this pic, I had no choice but to think of deeper things. Meditation (not the Yoga/New age type, but the pondering of deeper meanings type) is helpful to me to keep focused on my priorities. This pretty chipboard frame is from the Teresa Collins Now and Then collection.

I couldn't help but compare this photo to stargazing, which I love to do!

These adorable little word stickers are Heidi Swapp Vintage Chic Sentiment stickers. I think that we should all strive for seeing beauty everywhere, especially in unexpected places. This is truly how I aspire to live.

Some deeper thoughts as hidden journaling in the pocket on my LO. I hand cut this tag out of some of the leftover Heidi Swapp Vintage Chic Bookkeeping paper

The flip side...

Don't you just love this Teresa Collins washi tape?!?! I love adding washi tape under chipboard borders. It gives the LO more dimension and texture.
I really had fun making this layout. Don't forget you can pick up your own Heidi Swapp Just Dots and Bookkeeping papers and Vintage Chic Sentiment stickers at the Flamingo Scraps newly redesigned website! They also just added the Teresa Collins Now and Then collection packs, chipboard elements and washi tapes. They are to die for! I can't wait to create more projects with this collection!

Designing With 7 Gypsies

Hope all is doing well here at the flock today!! This week I decided to do a mini album using 7 Gypsies Avignon paper and using business size envelopes #10 (Size 4 1/8” X9 ½”) to create with. I have seen many different versions of this envelope mini. So, I did mine the way I wanted and changed it up a bit. I did not cut any of the envelopes anywhere else except for about a ¼ inch off of the top.
I decided to try some Brushed Sage Distress Ink instead of using my regular Brushed Corduroy or Vintage Photo. I liked it but, I think I will go back to my usual. LOL! I also used washers as you will see in the photos to reinforce the binding. I also added some paper to them…because they seemed a bit too flimsy. Hope you enjoy my mini as much as I enjoyed making it.

The supplies that I used on this is as follows
7 Gypsies Avignon Paper Pack 8x8

Maya Road Chipboard Shadow Box

Happy Thanksgiving ! Since I couldn't think of anything whimsical to create with a turkey,  I am bringing you another fine feathered friend of mine. It's our very own Big Pink Bird! I've had this Maya Road chipboard shadow box that has been crying out to be used in a not so conventional fashion, so I thought what better way to transform it than turn it into a Flamingo Bird House.

The house comes in two pieces, this is the back. You can see the roof portion and then the bottom of the house. I was SO excited to start this project that I forgot to take pictures of the bare chipboard in separate pieces. You can find this adorable item at http://stores.ebay.com/Flamingo-Scraps , but hurry ! Supplies are limited and you won't want to miss out ! The new Flamingo Scraps store is opening SOON at http://flamingoscraps.blogspot.com/p/store.html so make sure you subscribe to our blog and follow us on facebook.com to stay in the loop for the grand opening dates.

I used Tattered Angels Glimmer Mist for the bottom section and a different color for the top. I didn't worry about the entire roof since I was covering it with Mistable scalloped trim. The actual house is not as shiny in person, it's just the lighting. Be sure to color the sides as well.

The Mistables scallop trim has been Glimmer Misted with the "Starfish" shade. I layered the trim from the bottom up, alternating where the scallops fell. I then used the beautiful pearl swag trim from Flamingo Scraps for decoration. The Flamingo in the middle is actually a pin that I bought in 1985, and why I remember that I have no idea, but I have been dying to use this on a scrappy project.

I love the flamingo cameo, which is from the Websters Palm Beach Collection. The palm frond is Fab Scraps while the flamingo and buttons are from my stash. Yes, I have flamingos in my stash. Doesn't everyone?

Four square inserts came in the house, so I covered them with washi tape. The white floral paper you see in the corners is actually part of a Prima pack that I cut to use as a frame of sorts for a photo, or not. That's the beauty of this little shadowbox. It has endless possibilities.

And there you have it my fellow flocksters! My birdy contribution to a day where a bird is the star. While you might not be able to eat this particular bird, I can guarantee it won't ruin your diet, and it will put a smile on your face!!

The FABULOUS Flamingo Four, headed up by Cindy deRosier, will make their blog debut NEXT FRIDAY, November 30th. The gals have great projects using four Flamingo Scraps products and their individual creative flare. The Flamingo Four will be featured the fourth Friday of each month, with the exception of this month due to the holiday.

Don't forget to check back on Monday to find out more about the UStream project Tonya Gibbs has lined up for December 2nd at http://flamingoscraps.blogspot.com/2012/10/ustream .  Remember, Tonya airs the first Monday of each month, and the following Monday will be a Q & A about the previous UStream.

Have a Safe and Happy Thanksgiving !!
